Comprehensive Eye Exams Q & A

Why do I need an eye exam?

You need eye examinations so that your optometrist can identify and treat any problems with your vision or the structure of your eyes as early as possible. Routine eye exams also allow your provider to give you helpful tips on maintaining healthy eyes and vision throughout your life. Annual comprehensive exams are recommended for all adults and children.

If you have an eye condition, such as a lazy eye in children, or already wear glasses, you may need to see your optometrist more frequently. You should also have more frequent optometric visits if you have specific chronic health conditions (you may be at greater risk for vision problems).

You should also alert your optometrist if your family has a history of vision problems so that they can monitor your eye health closely.

What happens in an eye exam?

Your optometrist asks you questions to determine your personal and family history, discusses chronic conditions or allergies, and identifies your specific needs. The exam also includes evaluations of:

  • Visual acuity
  • Possible refraction errors
  • Visual fields
  • Color perception
  • Retinal health
  • Glaucoma risk
  • Macular degeneration risk

Your optometrist may put drops in your eyes to better visualize the veins in your eye, your retina, and your optic disk. Based on the results of these tests, your doctor either recommends no further treatment, prescribes corrective lenses, changes your current prescription, or recommends further testing.

If you already wear eyeglasses or contact lenses, you should bring them to your exam.

What if I want contact lenses?

If you want contact lenses, be sure to alert the staff at Sunset Optometric Center to schedule a special contact-lens evaluation after your regular eye exam.
